    Abstract/Overview

    The EAC Facts and Figures Report presents empirical data of socio-economic indicators in the region from which trends of development and growth levels can be analyzed. The data in the report was obtained from the National Statistics Offices, Central Banks and other government departments of the Partner States and targets a wide spectrum of users including policy makers, researchers, investors, academicians and development Partners. The 2014 edition of this report presents data for the year 2013 compared to the previous years. The report indicates that EAC midyear population was estimated at 143.5 million in June 2013, with average annual growth rate of remaining at the 2.6 percent over the last three consecutive years. The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) and maternal mortality rate in the region were estimated to stagnate at 5.2 percent and 469 deaths per 100,000 births, respectively. The infant mortality rate in 2013 was estimated to range from 49 to 112 deaths per 1000 infants while the child mortality rate ranged from 74 to 169 deaths per 1000 infants/children. On average, gross and net enrolment in Primary level of education in 2013 declined marginally in Burundi and Tanzania while that for Kenya and Rwanda improved. However, the secondary enrolment rates remain substantially lower than that of primary level The report further indicates that the total aggregate output (at current prices) for the region amounted to US$ 110.3 billion in 2013, compared to US$ 99.3 billion in 2012. The per capita GDP for the region in 2013 ranged from US$ 294.2 in Burundi to US$ 1,055.2 in Kenya. The dominant sector in all the Partner States in 2013 was agriculture, followed by wholesale and retail trade and manufacturing. The annual headline inflation rate declined in 2013 in all the Partner States as compared to the previous year.
